At the urging [suggestion] of Tom Lombardo and Jeanne Lombardo, whose descriptions of Jeff VanderMeer’s writing, persuaded me to put aside all other authors I was reading.
After reading Annihilation, I was compelled to take in the entire The Southern Reach Trilogy, no lapse in time between each book. Jeff VanderMeer’s lyrical writing about Area X is stunning and poetic. He pulls you through a riveting story where there are points in time, but no ending just existence, a new kind of existence that keeps your mind deeply engaged and at times spinning. I loved the adventure and images that emerged in my mind, but if you’re a linear reader you won’t enjoy it as much.
What I took away from this deeply involved science fiction masterpiece, is what happens when an “alien” primordial soup brews quietly, carefully and determinedly, while transforming, terraforming and transitioning the terrestrials. BUT is this earth or some other worldly place? I wasn’t able to tell and didn’t really care. Jeff VanderMeer’s rhythmic writing kept my attention as I hungered for his next description of the characters, geography, atmosphere, and journey into Area X and the Southern Reach, enamoring my senses to come to life, as I held on tight through the ride.
I am deeply curious about Alex Garland‘s film interpretation of Annihilation and looking forward to seeing how VanderMeer’s writing translates to the screen.
Jeff and Ann VanderMeer, are the brilliant creative dynamic duo, making science fiction imaginings real! I just got Borne and can’t wait to start in on it.
